Majala Mlagui
Majala Mlagui is a mining entrepreneur and African gemstone lover. While artisanal and smallscale miners produce 80% of the world’s fine gems at huge personal risk, they only see a small fraction of the multibillion-dollar profits. Majala founded her social enterprise Thamani Gems, to empower such miners in East Africa by helping them create sustainable livelihoods through responsible mining, ethical sourcing and access to fair-trade markets. Majala also provides professional-development resources to miners and helps them navigate complex regulatory and legal systems in their country. Majala provides consulting services on extractive governance and policy issues related to Artisanal and Small Scale Mining to development and governmental agencies. She is an alumnus of the 2014 Emerging leaders in Africa Mining programme run by the Minerals and Energy for Development Alliance (MEfDA, Australia) and a TED Fellow.
